Welcome to my little corner of the web, where I share how Rise, Roar and Soar came to be – a journey of rising from challenges, finding my spark, and daring to soar into the unknown. Like Shakira’s 🎶 song in Zootopia, which I cannot get out of my head now (you too??), I know what it’s like to fall down and get up again — over and over.
If you’ve ever faced moments where the odds felt stacked against you…I’d like you to know that you’re not alone.
This is my story: a journey from struggle to strength, with many rock bottoms, messy leaps, and unexpected discoveries.
Through it all, I’ve learned one simple truth: no matter where you are, it’s never too late to Rise, Roar and Soar. I hope my story inspires you to find your spark and embrace your own journey, wherever it may lead. 💫
Let’s start at the beginning…
Hero To Zero
For over two decades, I thrived in the IT space as a 🤓 specialist CRM Software Developer and Consultant (Salesforce, Siebel), earning accolades in South Africa and Australia. Working at tier 1 companies and niche consulting firms, I helped transform businesses with cutting-edge technology.
As part of an elite team, I was the Developer behind groundbreaking projects, including a global first in Salesforce AI Predictive (CRM) Analytics and Deloitte Digital’s global first Salesforce Chatbot implementation (and a second for Australia).
But behind the scenes, something wasn’t right. Quietly and persistently, challenges emerged — ones that would eventually force me to face difficult truths and make life-changing decisions.
The Silent Beast
At 41, I was diagnosed with hearing loss typically seen in people decades older. Like a frog in boiling water, I had unknowingly adapted to the gradual decline, but by 43, the severity became undeniable.
I could only catch about 20% of dialogue in movie theatres. At work, I relied on reviewing meeting transcripts and recordings to keep up, often burning the midnight oil. Despite incredible support from the Partners and Directors at Deloitte Digital, I realized I couldn’t keep going at this pace, and after another year of struggle, I had to make a choice.
A Leap Of Faith
I made the difficult decision to leave my career behind.
It wasn’t financially viable, but I chose the most promising path I could see: raising my kids and nurturing a healthy, happy home. It was my dream come true, and I threw myself into it wholeheartedly.
Cooking from scratch, building a zero-cost organic garden, and creating memories with my family brought me immense pride and joy, despite my many failed attempts along the way — just ask my family about those!
But life has a way of throwing curveballs. I had made peace with my hearing loss, but while I saw my domestic contributions as a veritable goldmine, the narrative did not.
Finding My Spark
Adding to the strain, my lack of income began to take its toll, and what was meant to be a happy haven started to feel anything but.
I wish I could tell you I hit rock bottom once, picked myself up, and all was well. But the truth is, I discovered there are many levels to rock bottom – each deeper than the last. It’s like you’re a nail being driven by a hammer, deeper and deeper, into a place you don’t want to be.
Then came the day the narrative dragged me to a rock bottom I refused to tolerate – that without an income I was worth nothing at all. It was a contradiction of everything I believed about myself and everything I had ever achieved.
That was the day a spark lit up inside me.
With the soul of a Phoenix, and the heart of a Lion…
I didn’t just rise. I roared.
You could say I turned that hammer around and used it to pull myself out of the place I never should have been!
Zero To Roaring
The challenges I couldn’t escape from became my stepping stones to success. Like Daisy, I channelled my focus into mindfulness and gratitude, and from within that space, an idea emerged — Writing. Suddenly, the pieces began to fall into place.
Like wiping a dirty window clean, I started to see clearly. Writing stories felt like something I was always meant to do.
With technology advancing so much, I realized that not only could I write and self-publish a book, but I could also bring my ideas to life visually using AI—all without spending a cent, or needing my ears! (By this time, I was unable to hear even 1-on-1 conversations at home.)
What started as a small spark quickly became a blazing bonfire.
The avalanche of ideas hasn’t stopped pouring in, and now my mission is clear: to build Rise, Roar and Soar into a vibrant community that inspires self-empowerment, mindfulness, and creativity — for all ages!
Learning & Growing
This new journey has taught me so much. I’ve learned to wear the many hats of an Author, AI Illustrator, Editor, Website Developer, and Social Channel Marketer. It’s been a vibrant mix of trial and error, aha moments and disturbingly hilarious I-can-DO-THIS!-pep-talk-with-myself conversations!
I’ve Googled more tutorials than I care to admit, gone back to the drawing board countless times, and made plenty of ‘oopsies’ along the way.
But every step forward is a win: growth isn’t about perfection — it’s about persistence. As Shakira says, 🎶 “I’ll keep on making those new mistakes. I’ll keep on making them everyday.” 🎶
I’m still learning, still growing — and while I may not have nailed it yet, my baby steps are keeping me Roaring.
I do hope you’ll forgive any ‘oopsies’ along the way!
